In trend with other colleges in the US, Scripps College plans to abide by public health and safety recommendations as more information about COVID-19 coronavirus and its spread is brought to public attention. “The College is currently engaged in planning for the 2020-2021 academic year and will share those plans with the campus community once they are finalized,” said Assistant Dean and Director of Campus Life Brenda Ice. How the College will do so has not yet been made public to the student body. Even so, Scripps College plans to welcome the classes of 2021-2024 in the fall of 2020. These are uncertain times for everyone, regardless of their affiliation with the Scripps community. In my experience, Scripps has done an incredible job imparting this into each of its students. This article will be updated as Scripps administration and Scripps Associated Students (SAS) release more information to the community. Our founder, Ellen Browning Scripps, stated that "it is the paramount obligation of a college to develop in its students the ability to think clearly and independently and the ability to live confidently, courageously, and hopefully". Overall, Scripps College is a very unique and amazing women's institutions. In terms of financial aid, Scripps covers 100% of the need-based financial aid, however, when they package students they do include loans to cover some of that need. Although, the Scripps Communities of Resources and Empowerment is a good place to start. In terms of diversity on campus, Scripps, like many other colleges still needs to work towards creating a more diverse and inclusive campus. tutoring, career services, counseling, etc.). There are numerous avenues through which students can receive help inside and outside the classroom (e.g. In addition to this, Scripps empowers students to succeed in and out of the classroom. Moreover, students are incredibly engaged on-campus and in all aspects of the community, in my experience, if a student wants to be in a leadership position, then there are plenty of opportunities through clubs, organizations, and on campus jobs. It is not unusual for students and professors to meet outside of the classroom and eat together. Staff and faculty are truly dedicated to developing personal and long-lasting mentoring relationships with students. "Scripps College does an amazing job of preparing students to think critically, question, and explore their interests while discovering new ones. However, in the years since my graduation, I believe this has changed, as students are given more practical assistance when planning for their futures." The only drawback at the time that I attended Scripps was the lack of career guidance. Also, all the students at the Claremont Colleges can take classes at any of the campuses, so sometimes I saw male students in my Scripps classes while other times I attended classes at Pitzer, Claremont McKenna or Pomona colleges. I simply needed to walk a block in any direction to come across male students. Also of note is that it never bothered me that I attended an all women's college. I remember the students were treated as independent adults expected to rise to the high academic standards of the college. Scripps herself said, The paramount obligation of a college is to develop in its students the ability to think clearly and independently, and the ability to live confidently, courageously, and hopefully. However, that is not to say that the curriculum was not rigorous. I did feel as though I were in an oasis of learning and all else seemed to fade into the background. I can remember sitting in the courtyard or under a tree, or in the beautiful Denison Library reading my books or writing an outline for a paper. The founder of Scripps College, Ellen Browning Scripps, believed that one's education was enhanced by lovely surroundings and architecture. Also, the campus is gorgeous and peaceful, further lending a focus to my experience, which may not have been possible if I were in a distracting, urban environment without beautifully, well-designed architecture. In addition, professors and instructors were readily available for questions and meetings. "Scripps College provided me with a wonderful education in a rarefied environment in which class sizes never exceeded 15 students.
