The Tiger should not have judged Anansi on his side and assumed that he was weak. This story is more about Anansi wanting to be remembered and using his intellect to show that he can do anything. This is another typical trickster tale but I think this one is more clever than the Grimm's stories I read. Of course the Tiger is surprised when Anansi brings him the gourd and the snake but ends up giving Anansi the names of the all the stories. The snake's arrogance allows Anansi to tie him onto bamboo so he can measure him. He sets a few traps with no luck and then uses his cunning to convince the snake that all the animals think he isn't longer than bamboo. The snake is harder for Anansi to capture though. ![]() He tells the bees that he told Tiger that he would be able to count how many bees will fit in the gourd so they enter one by one until it is filled and he plugs the hole. Anansi agrees happily and sets off on his journey. He tells Anansi that if he can capture a gourd of bees as well as a snake then he will let the stories be named after him. Anansi asks Tiger if he would be willing to let all the stories be named after him and the Tiger laughs. Anansi, who is a mere spider, is upset because Tiger has everything named after him because he is a spectacular beast. ![]() Anansi Returns is a traditional anansi story from Jamaica. ![]()
